Residential Complex “Junges Wohnen II” in the Stauferpark in Göppingen

Within the framework of the working group Stauferpark, Gaus & Knödler Architekten together with three other architects offices created a conception for 29 residential units. This order included the complete design of the new district.

After the withdrawal of the American forces in the early 1990s the city of Göppingen, took the opportunity to create new and affordable housing for young families (“Junges Wohnen”) on the former barracks area. In the course of the comprehensive redesign old buildings were renovated and new building constructed. Latter projects include the residence of “Junges Wohnen II”.

The Wohnbau GmbH in Göppingen commissioned four architectural firms with the cooperative planning and realization of the new district. Planning should be conclusively linked to the existing structure of “Junges Wohnen”. The resulting urban concept opened individual housing options of high quality through different types of buildings. Each House has its own private outdoor area.

Thanks to the different orientation of the groups of houses, a monotone sequence of rows of houses is excluded. The neighborhood square creates public space providing identity and social cohesion. In the new area, there is no through traffic. Linked to the development of the existing area “Junges Wohnen”, the access road acts as a pure local residential and play street.
